The Americas challenge Europe in soccer league influence rankings
-Most powerful domestic soccer leagues revealed by POWA Index-
DataPOWA Ltd has today released a list of the ten most powerful domestic soccer leagues as ranked by POWA index, the data-driven, real-time sports sponsorship valuation engine.
Three of the top ten leagues are from The Americas; Brazil’s Brasilieirao (4th), Mexico’s Liga MX (5th) and USA’s MLS (8th).
Six European leagues are featured, England’s Premier League (1st), Spain’s LaLiga (2nd), Italy’s Serie A (3rd), Germany’s Bundesliga (5th), France’s Ligue 1 (7th) and Turkey’s Super Lig (9th), with Japan’s J1 League (10th) being Asia’s only representative.
DataPOWA C.E.O. Michael Flynn said: “The commercial and sponsorship potential of The Americas’ top soccer leagues is yet to be fully realised, however the POWA index rankings prove they are now serious challengers to Europe’s dominance. Their leagues are benefiting from the proliferation of global sports streaming services which is helping to enhance their presence and create new fanbases, and they are using digital and social to harness the power of their own super clubs; Brasilieirao’s Flamengo and Corinthians, Liga MX’s Club America & Chivas, and MLS’ Los Angeles clubs, Atlanta United and now Inter Miami who are making great strides in creating a global soccer brand from scratch.”
The three leagues provide huge visibility for their sponsors, Brasilieirao (sponsors include Itau, Vivo, Mastercard & Fiat), Liga MX (title sponsor bank BBVA) and MLS (sponsors include AT&T, Audi, Coca-Cola & Target).
Eight of the top ten are the most powerful leagues from their country of origin, the exceptions being MLS, which is 5th in the list of USA ‘team sport’ leagues (after NBA, NFL, MLB & NHL) and Japan’s J1 League (2nd to Nippon Professional Baseball).
