REAL MADRID SECOND ONLY TO NBA IN GLOBAL SPORTS SPONSORSHIP RANKING

– Real Madrid, Barcelona and La Liga all in global sports sponsorship POWA index top ten –

POWA index, the world’s first data-driven, real-time sports sponsorship valuation engine, have provided data to highlight the value of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and La Liga amongst the 10 most valuable global sports sponsorship properties.

The POWA index ranking underlines 13-time European Champions Real Madrid’s position as the biggest sports club in the world, with Los Blancos only eclipsed by U.S. basketball’s NBA brand as the most valuable sports sponsorship rights holder globally. FC Barcelona sit third in the ranking and are valued as having greater worth than huge entities such as the NFL (American football), England’s Premier League, Manchester United and the UEFA Champions League.

La Liga, meanwhile, is the only other national football league to feature in the top ten in addition to the Premier League and is the second highest ranked domestic soccer competition in the world.

The winners of the last three UEFA Champions League titles, Real Madrid provide huge visibility for their two principal sponsors, shirt sponsor Emirates airline, and their technical partner, adidas. As the second highest valued sports sponsorship property in the world they are backed by heavyweight partners such as Audi, EA Sports, Hankook, Hugo Boss, Mahou and Nivea Men globally, with La Caixa, Coca-Cola and Sanitas backing them on a regional level.

Barcelona are the second highest placed football club and sit third in the global standings. Barca’s shirt sponsor is Japanese internet company Rakuten and their technical partner is Nike. La Liga, whose principal sponsor is bank Santander, and global partners include Nike, Tag Heuer and EA Sports, sit in ninth place, a testament to the commercial strength and viability of Spanish football.

La Liga, Real Madrid and Barça’s popularity is truly global and POWA index’s data sees them all register the USA as their most important territory outside of Spain. POWA index is the only tool available to clubs, leagues, federations and brands providing a definitive market valuation.

It does this by using artificial intelligence to assess a multitude of factors and benchmark the world’s rights-holders against each other. Through its proprietary algorithm, POWA index analyses trillions of data points across on-field performances, traditional media, digital media reach and fan engagement, and real-time online searches to provide an overall score for each rights-holder.

POWA index CEO, Michael Flynn, commented:

“Real Madrid & Barça are undeniably the two biggest clubs in sport globally, thanks to the combination of trophies in the cabinet and success in harnessing their enormous global fan base via TV, digital and social media. The fact that as individual clubs they both outrank the likes of the NFL, the FA Premier League and the UEFA Champions League is testament to their hard work and their enormous value to their sponsors. La Liga is also a huge draw for sponsors as the second highest ranked football league in the world, challenging the English Premier League for the top spot.”
